Careers & Training

MLW has an established reputation for providing excellent early career development in a number of strategic disciplines including Clinical Infectious Diseases, Epidemiology, Immunology, Molecular Microbiology, Ophthalmology, Public Health, Behavioural Science, Lung Health and Paediatrics, supporting the development of African and UK scientists. We have trained 124 scientists – 94 African of which 80 Malawian - in the last 10 years (See Partner Contributions and Figure 15 for detail). This reputation allows us to attract the brightest Malawian and regional African graduates and retain them in training through to postdoctoral level. In order to maintain this competitive pipeline and provide a foundation of scientific excellence to support Research Group development and productivity, we propose a central Training and Career Development strategy managed jointly between MLW and COM.
