The group builds on the widely decentralised HIV and TB care systems that were pioneered by the Malawian MoH, and on the laboratory and clinical strengths of MLW/COM/QECH, including a TB culture laboratory working to high GCLP standards. An urban field site in Blantyre has been developed, linked to two primary care clinics and supporting trial of community-based interventions with impact evaluation.


Combined of strengths support population level interventions with health outcomes evaluated through cluster randomised trials, microbiology, pharmacology and clinical trials. Development of multidisciplinary research had initial focus on medical anthropology, and now includes health economics and genomics. Strong links to UK and US collaborators support statistical analysis and pharmacological modelling.
