In order to equip biomedical researchers and students with Bioinformatics and its application to biological research, Malawi-Liverpool-Wellcome Trust (MLW) is working towards building the capacity of the bioinformatics research team through trainings.

Recently, the team conducted a two-day training workshop for Bioinformatics researchers with primary focus on basics of its technologies used to generate high-throughput genomic data, fundamental application and how to anayse and visualize data using widely software packages.

As Ebola continues to spread in West Africa with latest information from the World Health Organisation WHO showing that at least 1, 350 people have died from the disease, Wellcome Trust on 21st of August 2014 announced a multi-million pound emergency funding for research into the disease and separate £40 million investment in African research.


It is believed that the research would help contain the epidemic in West Africa and future outbreaks of the infectious disease.


The Ebola, named after the Ebola River in Zaire - dates back to 1976 - when it first emerged in Sudan and Zaire. The virus has been around in West Africa but starting from July this year, the virus has spread rapidly.

Pneumonia is one of the leading causes of child morbidity in Malawi with thousands of children under the age of five reported to be dying every year.


Exposure to smoke produced when biomass fuels (animal or plant material) are burned in open fires is a major risk factor in more cases of pneumonia.


In Malawi, where at least 95% of households depend on biomass as their main source of fuel, biomass smoke exposure is likely to be responsible for a substantial burden of this disease.
