The Malawi-Liverpool-Wellcome (MLW) Programme ( is an internationally recognized centre for research and research training, funded by the Wellcome Trust. In collaboration with the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS), College of Medicine. MLW would like to engage the services of a competent and dynamic individual to work in an exciting Research Programme at the MLW Research facility as it is expanding.

Communications and Media Engagement Coordinator – 1 post, based in Blantyre (initial 12months contract with the possibility of renewal)

Job Summary:

The Communications and Media Engagement Coordinator’s role is to support internal and external communications as well as media engagement. The Coordinator will lead in the planning, implementation, and monitoring of MLW’s key communications and media activities and projects to enhance communications and visibility nationally and internationally. The Media Engagement component of MLW strengthens the relationship between the research community and the media (local and international) through regular interactions. Further to this through planned media engagement we identify and address the capacity-building needs of journalists in reporting on health research through the provision of capacity-building initiatives such as residencies and training sessions.


Key Responsibilities

1. Develop high-quality written and visual content for the MLW newsletter, website, and other platforms from research papers, research briefs, and interviews with researchers.

2. Oversee the development of multimedia content that is commissioned to external content creators to ensure consistent application of brand guidelines and other policies of MLW.

3. Organize and coordinate press briefings, and media coverage for MLW events and activities, including preparation and distribution of media packs to journalists and arranging interviews.

4. Identify opportunities for MLW’s research work to be featured in local and international media

5. Sustain the Journalist in Residence program, an initiative by MLW designed to enhance interaction between researchers and Journalists i.e., planning and delivery of quarterly interactive meetings between JIR members and MLW researchers, and providing regular support to JIR members.

6. Coordinate pre-production, production, and post-production of the Umoyo Nkukambirana radio Program and Emerging Insights TV programs sponsored by MLW to disseminate information to the public about health and health research by working closely with production studios and internal and external stakeholders

1. Documentation and M& E

· Preparing monthly Reports as well as specific project reports

· Maintaining clear records of all work done

2. Health and Safety

· Attend all Health and Safety training

· Observe all health and safety rules and regulations as stipulated by MLW

3. Safeguarding

· Attend safeguarding training and possess comprehensive awareness of the MLW safeguarding policy.


Qualifications and Experience

· Bachelor’s degree in Journalism or Mass Communication.

Personal Specifications

· Computer literacy i.e., Microsoft word, basic excel, virtual communication platforms i.e., Microsoft Teams

· Good oral presentation skills

· Good report writing skills

· Fluent in Chichewa and English (speaking and writing)

· Able to communicate effectively with both local and international stakeholders

· Ability to understand and demonstrate awareness and sensitivity to different cultural norms.

· Efficient and well organized, with excellent attention to detail.

· Enthusiastic and able to work under pressure and to deadlines.

· Ability to be flexible and adaptable to changing situations and workloads.

· Good financial accountability.

· Experience in working with rural and urban communities

Desirable skills
