MLW’s Pre-Masters intern Innocent Sulani was recently awarded the Beit Trust-University of Glasgow Scholarship for postgraduate training in Immunology and Inflammatory Diseases at the University of Glasgow.
“I feel honoured and privileged to be one of the few Beit scholars for the 2021 cohort. It is exhilarating! From September 2021, I will start my masters’ training in Immunology and Inflammatory Diseases at the University of Glasgow. This is a 1-year program and I intend to take advantage of this training to obtain advanced immunology skills, and upon completion of my studies, I will return to Malawi to contribute to advancing the capacity of immunology research at my host institution (Malawi Liverpool Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Programme), within Malawi and Sub-Saharan Africa,” said Innocent Sulani.
Innocent first joined MLW in 2020 under the CORE MLW Pre-masters internship program. He has been working within the Clinical and Laboratory Malaria Research Group under the supervision of Dr. Karl Seydel.
During his internship, Innocent has been laying a strong foundation for his postgraduate studies through training as well as conducting research. His Pre-Master internship project aimed at understanding the host immunological characteristics that contribute to malaria pathogenesis as well as protection against the development of clinical malaria disease. He was involved in protocol development, study setup, as well as implementation. This made Innocent Sulani a very strong and competitive candidate when he later decided to apply for university admission and scholarships.
The Beit Trust scholarships are awarded every year to support postgraduate training in the UK and South Africa. These awards are available to applicants who intend to advance their careers at any of the seven Beit Trust partner universities in the UK or three partner universities in South Africa as listed on the Beit Trust website.
Congratulations, Innocent Sulani!
