The Maternal, Neonatal and Child Health Theme is a collaborative network of scientists at MLW and associated institutions, working together to support each other and enhance our research on mothers, neonates, children, and adolescents. The theme’s vision is:

To conduct high quality research to ensure every mother, baby and child have the opportunity for healthy lives; enabling a healthier community and society
To build sustainable capacity for maternal, neonatal and child health research in Malawi and the region
Inform policy and practice across low resource settings to improve maternal, neonatal and child health

Annie Kuyere

Research Nurse

A registered nurse and midwife who graduated from Mzuzu University with an upper second-class bachelor's degree in nursing and midwifery. I Joined the Malawi-Liverpool Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Programme in 2021 and is currently working as a research nurse in the Maternal Health group. I am passionate about sexual and reproductive health in women and adolescent girls.

Regina Makuluni Kachitsa

Senior Research Nurse

Highly motivated Senior Research Nurse, with more than seven years’ experience in maternal and newborn health. I have a background in Epidemiology and equipped with research experience gained from conducting different health research.

Leonard Mndala

Public health Researcher Intern

An emerging public health researcher. My interest is in implementation research and health systems research within the maternal and child health field. I am working as a Research Trainee at a pre-PhD level in the Maternal and Fetal Health group at MLW; providing research support through quantitative data analysis, training, and development of evaluation tools.

Chikondi Chapuma

PhD Student

A Public Health Scientist at doctoral training level in the maternal health group with a broad perspective on global and public health through her Master of Public Health and medical degrees. I have experience in managing an international clinical trial and implementation studies in Malawian pregnant women and has skills in qualitative and quantitative research methods, communication, and collaborative teamwork.

Bertha Maseko

Maternal Health Group Manager

Managing a team of various professional and academic background to achieve our Maternal neonatal and fetal health research goals. I have a Master of science degree in Public Health with Registered Nursing and Midwifery background. A vast experience in the conduct of Clinical trials implemented at individual, multisite and multicounty level. Skilled in both qualitative and quantitative research methods. Highly passionate to improving Maternal, Neonatal and fetal health in Malawi.

Edward Monk

Volunteer Research Fellow

A physician from the UK with an interest in infectious diseases, epidemiology, and global health, volunteering with the group to help draw together the materials required to implement the APT-Sepsis Programme (due to start recruitment in early 2022).

Laura Munthali

Senior Research Nurse, Master Science Student in Global Health (LSTM)

A graduate with a BSc in Nursing and Midwifery from Kamuzu College of Nursing (KuHeS). I have a lot of experience in clinical management (Maternity Theatre In-charge, Labor Ward Team Leader, Maternity Unit Matron), project and partnerships coordination. I also have vast knowledge in coordinating and implementing research studies under maternal and newborn health. Currently, pursuing a MSc in Global Health at LSTM through AmmaLife’s student award with the aim of becoming a global health scientist conducting research in the maternal health field.

Charlotte van der Veer

Post-doctoral Biomedical Researcher

My work focuses on the microbiological aspects of maternal and neonatal health and disease. I obtained my PhD from the University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands during which time I specialized in molecular epidemiology, diagnostics, and microbiome analyses with particular focus on sexually transmitted infections.

Professor David Lissauer

MBChB, BMedSci, PhD, MRCOG, NIHR Professor of Global Maternal and Fetal Health Women's & Children's Health and Maternal Health Group Lead

David is NIHR Professor of Global Maternal and Fetal Health. He is resident in Malawi, working at the Malawi-Liverpool-Wellcome Trust research institute. He is a sub-specialist in maternal and fetal medicine, and practices clinically at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital, Blantyre, Malawi.

Vita Nyasulu

Laboratory Technician

Has worked on CRYPTOFAZ study, which was evaluating the effectiveness of Clofazimine in diarrheic individuals caused by Cryptosporidium. He is currently working on the BAMBI and DIPLO-STI studies, which are investigating maternal risk factors and biomarkers for prediction of early onset of neonatal infection and the epidemiology and contribution of STIs to adverse birth outcomes in Malawi. He holds a BSc. in Biomedical Sciences, obtained from Mzuzu University in 2014.

My key roles involve “Liaison”, “Organisation” and “Support”. Each day I come to work, presents me an opportunity to work with an excellent team of researchers who encourage me to do my very best to equally deliver excellence. My job is dynamic and very exciting as I work with various teams conducting various studies within the group.
