Dr. Moses Kelly Kumwenda is a behaviour social scientist and health systems researcher at the Malawi Liverpool Wellcome Research Programme (MLW) and the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine’s (LSTM) Institute for Resilient Health Systems (IRHS), where he contributes to interdisciplinary research to improve health outcomes of vulnerable populations in Malawi and beyond.
His behavioural research focuses on the social, cultural, technological, and political dimensions of health and health systems, with expertise in participatory methodologies, implementation science, and climate-related health risks. Moses’ research explores how local knowledge systems, power relations, and everyday lived experiences shape health behaviours, and patients’ engagement with health systems.
He has extensive experience working in Malawi and several African countriesresearc, collaborating closely with communities, frontline health workers, implementers, policy actors and researchers. His expertise includes process and impact evaluation, qualitative needs assessment, qualitative evidence synthesis, participatory methodologies, qualitative research, and public health policy analysis. Moses has authored and co-authored a large number of publications in peer-reviewed journals, including a publication on Exploring social harms during distribution of HIV self-testing kits in Malawi.
