What is MLW’s mission?

MLW’s mission is “to conduct internationally excellent health research to benefit Malawi and train the next generation of researchers”.

MLW is primarily funded by Wellcome, a UK-based global health research foundation, through core and capital grants. Additional funding is secured through competitive research grants.

MLW’s head office is based on the Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital Campus in Blantyre, Malawi.

Yes. MLW regularly organizes forums, public lectures, school visits, and outreach activities to share research insights and gather public feedback.

MLW focuses on high-impact translational research in areas such as malaria, tuberculosis, HIV, pneumonia, diarrhoeal disease, antimicrobial resistance, vaccines, maternal and neonatal health, and emerging infections. Our research addresses both local and global health priorities.

MLW engages in evidence-based research that informs national and global health policies. Notable examples include:
  • HIV self-testing policy changes in 59 countries.
  • National rollout of the Typhoid Conjugate Vaccine in Malawi.
  • New treatment guidelines for cryptococcal meningitis.
  • Critical COVID-19 diagnostics and infrastructure support. These demonstrate our commitment to translating research into improved health outcomes.

Yes. MLW conducts Phase II and III trials and is expanding into early-phase clinical trials involving vaccines, therapeutics, and diagnostics.

Study participants are selected based on specific research protocols and ethical approvals. If you’re approached, you’ll receive full information and give informed consent before joining. Participation is voluntary.
