Job Description

The Malawi – Liverpool – Wellcome – Programme (MLW) (http://www.mlw.mw) is an internationally recognized centre for research and training, funded by the Wellcome Trust in collaboration with our key partners, the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KuHes), Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) and University of Liverpool (UoL) among others. We are committed to promoting research and training led by Malawian & International scientists, with the aim of improving the health of people in Malawi and elsewhere in the Region.

We are seeking a professional and experienced Senior Research Nurse to join the Infectious Disease Epidemiology (IDE) Group under the CHAMP Drug Study. The successful candidate will be working full time under the direction and supervision of the project site lead.

This is a one-year contract based in Mwanza.

The Senior Research Nurse will report to the project site lead.

Responsibilities

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Supervise and manage the field team of Field Research Assistants (Medical Assistants, Nurses and other field workers) and ensure efficient and effective implementation of the protocol in accordance with MLW procedures and applicable ethics requirements.
  2. Coordinate household mapping and community-based census activities within the study catchment areas and ensure proper participant screening, informed consent and enrolment activities according to the study protocol and GCP requirements.
  3. Supervise administration of study medication (DOT) during the five-month intervention period and ensure adherence to dosing schedules and protocol procedures.
  4. Monitor study participants during and after drug administration, document and report adverse events (AEs) and serious adverse events (SAEs) and ensure prompt management according to protocol and regulatory timelines.
  5. Oversee collection, processing, documentation, storage and transportation of study samples in accordance with protocol requirements and laboratory procedures.
  6. Ensure accurate and timely electronic data collection using tablets and maintain high standards of data quality and completeness.
  7. Health facility surveillance: Identify or facilitate the identification of study participants presenting for sick visits at health centres, and support collection of required study samples in line with study procedures.
  8. Conduct routine verification of source documents and resolve data queries in collaboration with the data management team.
  9. Assist with planning field activities, transport logistics and allocation of study resources for smooth implementation of study activities.
  10. Ensure proper use, accountability and maintenance of study equipment, tablets, consumables and other field resources.

RESPONSIBILITY: 

For people (supervisory): 

  • Supervise FRAs (Nurses, Medical Assistants) and other field staff
  • Coordinate day-to-day field and clinic activities in collaboration with the Project Site Lead
  • Support staff mentorship, training and performance monitoring

For resources:

  • Tablets and electronic data collection devices
  • Study drugs, sample collection materials and consumables
  • Study vehicles and other field equipment

Requirements

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing or Diploma in Nursing and Midwifery Technician
  • Registered with the Nurses and Midwives Council of Malawi
  • At least 3 years of experience working in a large-scale malaria or related research
