Senior Physician Lead

NPK Banda is specialized in internal medicine, tropical and respiratory medicine with extensive clinical, teaching and research experience. He has conducted clinical and impactful research since 2007. His initial research focus was on early mortality and lung function impairment in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis. Over the years he has been involved in clinical and implementation research on HIV and tuberculosis, post-tuberculosis chronic lung disease, appropriate prophylaxis in patients with advanced HIV infection (REALITY clinical trial), services improvement in Malawi for non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, heart failure, asthma and COPD that are causing significant morbidity and mortality. He previously served as Investigator of record for a multicenter clinical trial (BRIEF- TB/A5279) at John Hopkins Blantyre Research site. His current research focuses on controlled human infection model (CHIM) using pneumococcal vaccine challenge model and new immunomodulatory agents in the fight against pneumococcal infection in both healthy and high risk HIV infected population and BCG CHIM. He is also currently involved in the following studies :BREATHE multi-country and multicenter clinical trial which is comparing high flow oxygen versus standard flow oxygen impact on mortality in patients admitted with acute hypoxemia of any cause as part of developing strategies that would optimize respiratory support for patients with hypoxia in low and middle income countries; Impact of community sputum collection points and community volunteers on diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis and treatment outcomes and Characterization of lung airway cells associated with sputum conversion and post-tuberculosis chronic lung disease in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis. Future research work will include TB human challenge studies to help bring forward vaccine discovery in Malawi. As a consultant at Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHES) and Queen Elizabeth Central and Teaching hospital (QECH), NPK Banda has been involved in patients care, teaching of both undergraduate and postgraduate students and supervising students research work. He was coinvestigator for NCD-BRITE grant – Building Research capacity, implementation and Translation Expertise grant whose objectives included needs assessment on Non-communicable diseases (NCD) and mentoring young researchers on their research projects. Previous consultant reviewer of Foundation for Innovative New Diagnostics (non-profit organization based in Geneva, Switzerland) on studies about causes of febrile illness for three years in the recent past. He is former head of Medicine department at KUHES and previous Project lead at KUHES on World Diabetes Federation grant that implemented improved diabetes services across Malawi health facilities. He also served as Member of COVID-19 pandemic response leadership at KUHES, QECH and National level. He is board member of National Medicines and Supply Committee that is responsible for development and regular revision of Malawi Standard Treatment Guidelines among other mandates. He is founding member of East Central and Southern Africa College of Physicians and Malawi College of Physicians whose main objective is to train Specialist Physicians in Internal medicine that will improve patients care, research activities and health workers’ teaching in Africa.
