From 9–13 June 2025, Malawi Liverpool Wellcome (MLW) hosted a five-day training workshop on Climate Change and Health at Amaryllis Hotel in Blantyre, as part of the Engaging Communities on Climate and Health project. The workshop aimed to build the capacity of community radio journalists to report more effectively on the health impacts of climate change. Participants included media professionals from various outlets such as Ndirande FM, YONECO FM, Blantyre Synod FM, Times Media Group, and the Malawi Broadcasting Corporation. The event also welcomed key district officials who provided valuable context and expressed strong support for the initiative.
The training used an interactive, hands-on approach with role plays, case studies, field reporting, and story-gathering exercises. Journalists learned to apply frameworks such as the Social Ecological Model to improve their storytelling and encourage community action. This participatory style helped participants move beyond simply quoting authorities, equipping them to identify root causes, propose solutions, and inspire change through their reporting. One participant, Evance Matola from Mzati FM, noted a shift in his reporting style, saying he now feels empowered to offer more solution-driven and community-informed stories.
This workshop represents a significant step forward in building grassroots responses to the health effects of climate change and reinforces MLW’s commitment to working with the media as a key partner in public health communication. By empowering journalists with knowledge and tools, MLW is helping shape a more informed and proactive public dialogue around climate and health issues in Malawi.
