Clinical and Laboratory Malaria

The Clinical and Laboratory Malaria group seeks not only to understand why some children die of malaria – but also why some individuals fail to develop clinical disease despite being infected with the malaria parasite. Remarkable progress has been made in decreasing malaria mortality; less progress has been made in defining how a transmission reservoir has been maintained in these asymptomatic carriers. The group has several clinical studies recruiting individuals with varying levels of disease. Samples from these individuals are collected and analysed in detail to dissect the pathophysiology of the disease and its consequences.
