Neglected Tropical Diseases

Trypanosomiasis and schistosomiasis are two of the neglected tropical diseases with high burden in Malawi. We are investigating the genetic determinants of the human reservoirs of HAT and schistosomiasis and also mapping the areas where these diseases are found, filling an important knowledge gap, while extending and strengthening the underpinning infrastructure to deliver these scientific objectives in particular by developing the next generation of African scientists.

Current Activity

  • Site mapping of all schistosomiasis current hot spots for both the parasite and snail hosts
  • Identifying active and old cases of trypanosomiasis and determining cytokine profile as a marker for the stages
  • Identifying active and old cases of trypanosomiasis and determining genes that makes humans susceptible to infection

Following disease progression of trypanosomiasis Malawi trypanosomiasis HAT strains to understand the uniqueness of the Malawian HAT
