The Malawi Liverpool Wellcome Research Programme (MLW) has taken a major step in its digital transformation journey with the implementation of a new Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system.
The new system will be key in streamlining operations, strengthening governance and improving data-driven decision-making.
MLW Chief Operating Officer Aubrey Chalira described the ERP as a strategic investment. Chalira said the system will support the institution’s research and training mission by improving integration, governance and access to reliable data.
Following the signing of a contract with Kinetics Technology Limited, Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central-powered solution will facilitate the integration of key functions across the institution such as finance, supply chain, grants management, project management and people management. This is expected to materialise in the next nine months.
“It’s not just a technological investment. This is a strategic investment that will support our work by ensuring we have credible data, stronger integration, and improved governance and compliance,” Chalira said.
The new system is expected to deliver significant benefits through increased automation, improved access to information and more efficient workflows.
ERP Consultant Herbert Rwamibazi said the platform will enhance operational efficiency while enabling stronger integration with both internal and external stakeholders.
“Once the system is implemented, it will improve operational efficiency. It will allow integration with different partners, especially on the supply chain side, for suppliers, employees and other stakeholders” he said.
Rwamibazi also highlighted the importance of the system’s reporting capabilities, noting that improved reporting will support departmental operations while helping the institution meet the needs of research partners, funders and other key stakeholders.
A key feature of the project is the introduction of a dedicated MLW mobile application, which will allow staff to submit claims, manage requests and process approvals digitally.
Kinetics Technology Limited Chief Executive Officer Antony Mwando said the solution will leverage automation and artificial intelligence to simplify routine tasks and improve visibility across the organisation.
“We want to simplify daily operations so that people can focus on the work that matters most while increasing visibility, reporting, and access to data” he said.
Once completed, the ERP system is expected to create a more connected, efficient, and data-driven environment that strengthens MLW’s ability to deliver world-class research and training.
