Dr. Mphatso Kantonya Awarded a Scholarship for an MSc in Clinical Epidemiology.

Mphatso Kantonya, a junior investigator for the OPTIMAL study, has recently been awarded a Global Evidence, Local Adaptation project (GELA) scholarship to study toward an MSc in Clinical Epidemiology.

Kantonya joined the Malawi Liverpool Wellcome Programme in September 2022 on a training post. Supported by the study PI, he applied to Stellenbosch University for the MSc in Clinical Epidemiology program. This was followed by an application for the GELA scholarship. Within three months of joining MLW, he managed to secure both the MSc place and the scholarship.

GELA is a 3-year EDCTP-funded project that aims to enhance capacity for evidence-informed decision-making and guideline adaptation in new-born and child health in three sub-Saharan African countries. This will be achieved by following a process of priority setting; finding, appraising, and using guidelines and systematic reviews, as well as adapting or contextualizing these in a transparent-, credible evidence-to decision process which is digitally supported using appropriate technology. The scholarship will be administered by the host institution and will cover the following over the 2-year programme:

  • Registration and tuition fees
  • Limited research costs
  • Travel and accommodation to attend block days in Cape Town (2 trips)

Kantonya said “The strides attained within the short period since joining MLW clearly show how enabling the environment is, and it’s fascinating. This successful application represents the commitment that MLW and its group leaders must develop potential individuals into competent researchers in their fields of interest. I take this achievement as a concrete step towards achieving my long-term career goal of becoming a competent clinician-scientist focusing on infectious diseases research in children”.

We are proud of you, Mphatso Kantonya!
