The Malawi Liverpool Wellcome Research Programme (MLW) and the Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen collaboration in health research, capacity building, student training and knowledge exchange.
This marks MLW’s first formal partnership with an academic institution outside its longstanding affiliation with Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS).
Signed on 9th July 2026 at MUST’s City Campus in Blantyre, the agreement reflects a shared commitment to strengthening Malawi’s research ecosystem and expanding opportunities for scientific training and innovation.
Professor Malata said the partnership will create valuable opportunities for students and academic staff while addressing Malawi’s health challenges through research and innovation.
“By working closely with MLW, our students and staff will benefit from exposure to world-class research environments while gaining skills and experience that will contribute to scientific discovery and national development,” she said.
Professor Mwandumba said the collaboration aligns with MLW’s mission to develop future scientific leaders and strengthen research capacity in Malawi.
“One of MLW’s core missions is to train the next generation of researchers and leaders. This partnership with MUST creates opportunities for mentorship, research training and practical experience that will help nurture future health scientists,” he said.
The partnership is expected to facilitate joint research initiatives, academic exchanges and training opportunities for students, researchers and faculty members, contributing to the growth of health research and scientific capacity development in Malawi.
Other senior officials who attended the ceremony include MLW Deputy Director Professor Janelisa Musaya and Chief Operating Officer Mr Aubrey Chalira.
