Science for All (SCI4O) is an initiative that was established in 2016 by Associate Professor Kondwani Jambo. It is located here at the Malawi Liverpool Wellcome Research Programme (MLW), a centre of excellence renowned for conducting excellent and relevant research to improve health, and for training the next generation of researchers and leaders. The SCI4O initiative aims to inspire students to pursue careers in clinical and biomedical sciences and it works with students from primary schools, secondary schools and universities. SCI4O is run by a team of volunteers who are very passionate about inspiring and training the next generation of scientists.
The initiative has a proven track record of being impactful, valuable, and transferrable because it equips students with the skills and confidence they need to excel in higher education and beyond. Our vision is to see biomedical and clinical science careers among the top three careers of choice for the youth in Malawi. As such, our mission is to make biomedical and clinical science a career of choice among the youth in Malawi. The initiative aims to achieve three primary objectives. Firstly, it seeks to foster mentorship between Malawian scientists in clinical and biomedical sciences and students. Secondly, it aims to conduct educational campaigns on clinical and biomedical sciences in schools. Thirdly, inspiring the youth to engage in science-related activities like research and innovation.
In addition, the initiative collaborates with the Ministry of Education to periodically revise and distribute a curriculum guide for secondary students to keep up with the advancing scientific world. The curriculum guide includes topics such as Climate Change and Geography, Waste management, Statistics in Health Research, HIV and AIDS, Introduction to Immunology, Cholera, Genetics, Nature Conservation, Vaccine, Biochemistry, Circulatory System, Non-Communicable Diseases, Team Building, AI & Machine Learning, and Cybersecurity.
