MLW, Voices Malawi Highlight Climate–Health Connection
In a vibrant display of community engagement, the Voices Malawi group, in partnership with the Malawi Liverpool Wellcome Research Programme (MLW), hosted a successful outreach event on July 24, 2025. Held in Singano village, the gathering aimed to raise awareness of the significant impact of climate change on public health, a growing concern in districts like Chikwawa.
The event drew a large and enthusiastic crowd with a diverse programme of activities. Attendees enjoyed spirited musical and poetry performances, traditional dances, and an exciting football match. Project participants from the village also shared personal stories and insights, offering a powerful local perspective on the topic.
Group Village Headman Singano expressed heartfelt gratitude to Voices Malawi and MLW for bringing the project to his community. He recalled the devastating effects of Cyclone Anna, which caused severe floods that destroyed homes, clinics, and sanitation facilities, leaving villagers vulnerable to multiple health challenges. The headman urged the organizations to continue supporting future campaigns on climate change and health to help improve the quality of life for his people.
Apostle Jona Lifandika, Director of Voices Malawi, called for greater collaboration. He invited both governmental and non-governmental organizations to work alongside Voices Malawi in addressing the health impacts of climate change. He also encouraged partnerships with artists—poets, musicians, and performers—to amplify the message and increase awareness.
Launched in September 2024, the project is scheduled to conclude in September 2025. Project lead Tracy Chasima confirmed the initiative’s success, highlighting the positive feedback received from community participants. She further commended the vital role played by village chiefs and community members in ensuring effective implementation.
